Armistice Day, 2017

As November 11 draws near, I ready myself to observe  Armistice Day, a day set aside to honor the 17 million war dead of the Great War. Since 1954 its official name has been Veterans Day, which honors all veterans, living and dead, who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States (including me).

While it is just and good that all veterans be honored with a special day, I am cognizant of the fact that the basis for the holiday, and the date on which the holiday is observed, is that The Great War (which we now call World War I) ended in 1918 on November 11.  To this day, many other countries honor those who sacrificed their lives in World War I  by observing Armistice Day, or in some cases, Remembrance Day. Folk … What’s in a Name?

From the birth of the Compact Disc until the death of physical media, there was a figurative explosion in the number of music categories one could browse down at the local edition of whichever cookie-cutter corporate music store chain happened to be in your path.  And some of those categories (World Music, Folk Metal, Alt-Country, etc.) would have been, at one point in time, likely dropped into the “Folk Music” category, which by the 1990s, was likely to be the least stocked category in the entire store.

Style Evolution

I’ve been walking recently, more for exercise than anything else, but taking the time to go out and put one foot in front of the other has given me time to do some thinking. I’ve noticed that this seems to be the year of fluorescent footwear, often paired with a matching shirt. Frankly, it hurts my eyes. I lean more towards earth tones. And I was feeling pretty good about myself … no slave to fashion am I.
